Explore the Trails
We are grateful to the generosity of land owners for opening their properties to the Horse Treks for our enjoyment.
Our Trails are all straight forward and full of evidence of the previous volcanic activity typical of this area. We ride through open grassland, and native forest. While there are large areas of gorse the native bush is progressively establishing itself amongst the gorse. The native forest we ride through is all coastal varieties, lace bark, pepper tree, manuka, kanuka, kowhai, broadleaf, and matipos. The native bird song prevalent along all the trails is mostly bellbirds and the playful fantail will often follow our horses as they unsettle small flying insects with their hoofs. We see sheep and cattle, pheasants, Hawks, and sometimes wild goats, deer and pigs along the trails.
We climb as high as 2,000 feet and are often above 1,000 feet. The rides are weather dependant, but we can always get onto the Port hills via the all weather road up Gherkins Road. Enjoy your ride and learn about this interesting area from your trek guide.
